i will soon be moving to an island where we will have to depend on our own skills ,grow most of our own food and make all pour own sweaters gloves, hats, scarves, and churn our own butter i will not have access to info coming from the internet so I am trying to gather as much info now as I can, so when the power is down in winter storms I can still do my needlework, by the rosy glow of a fire and candles Wow long winded

Hi and welcome to Stitching Fingers.  wow You will not have much time to stitch but every stitch will count that is for sure. There are  a lot of really skilled people here as well as beginners.  Everyone is friendly and helpful. I am sure you can gather the information you need just by asking. hugs Elaine
