hand embroidery, especially samplers and canvaswork.
I am a member of the Chelston branch of Westcountry Embroiderers, the Sampler Guild and the Cross Stitch Guild. I prefer to stitch my own designs for which I use the Jane Greenoff computer programme. I have tried patchwork and quilting but prefer all aspects of counted thread embroidery.
Where did you learn your textle skills?
I can remember my first embroidery lesson in the first year of junior school. (I made 2 chairbacks and a settee back to match) and I've been hooked ever since. A sampler stitch needlecase made in the first year at Grammar School only strengthened my interest. My mother had always been a keen embroiderer and had plenty of materials for me to practice with. Since leaving school I've attended numerous further education classes and now as a member of WCE attend at least 4 day schools each year to try out new skills. I have a library of needlework books from which I take inspiration and advice and am happy to practice my stitching at every opportunity.

Hi Sandra - thanks for your comment on my Marble Waves freeform bargello - glad you like it :-) ! Yes, I started with the wave motif in the centre, and used that shape to 'build' the bargello around it, rather than use a standard, static fill pattern. Had to be very careful where the mitred corners joined, but this wouldn't be a problem if the central motif was symmetrical. I'm playing with a few variations on the theme at the moment. Have fun exploring!
Hi Sandra,

Hi Margreet,
thanks for your welcome. I feel very lucky to live in the Babbacombe district of Torquay. We do get a lot of visitors from Europe and are delighted to share it's beauty with them. I am able to walk along the beach and cliff tops most days now that I am retired. I've always loved the sea in all it's moods and enjoy using it as inspiration for my sampler designs. greetings from South Devon - Sandra
