Hi! Welcome to the group and to tatting! I am also a shuttle tatter. I don't have a specific pattern to offer, but anything with just a shuttle (for rings) and a ball of thread (for chains) is perfect for a beginner! I love the basic cloverleaf, too…

PattyD replied to Ruth Grinyer's discussion 'Picot Joins' in the group Lace Makers
Well, first of all what sort of join do you define as "messy". Until fairly recently, the normal join was to pull the working thread of the part being joined UP through the picot being joined to. This produces a join that does not have a cap and so…

Hi There, Thanks to the people who helped me before, and now I am looking for some more advice. Is there any tips you can give me to make my joins of one ring to another via a picot neater? I have found that when I do a Dora Young Knot to the picot…

Hello Ruth, and welcome to a wonderful way of passing time! There are lots of wonderful patterns available online...a good place to start is by looking at the 25 motif challenge. You will meet other beginners, as well as more experienced tatters, an…

Thanks foor the reply. I currently have 2 shuttles, but only one colour of thread. I am using size 5 thread, but I am hoping to attempt using a thinner thread when I have ran out. I do find it fustrating at times, especally when I am doing something…

Since you just want to be sure that the stitches are secure, you could always just do a regular cross stitch for the eyes. It might change the look a little, but probably would work ok. Or if you wanted a little bit of a raised effect, do something…

I have uploaded a picture of the kit that I am doing. I have noticed that there are french knots on the buttons as well. @Narita: I checked out the site, and I am waiting to hear if they deliver to the UK. Thanks for the link. Also thanks for all…

The french knots are for the eyes. The Colonial knot seems to be the one I was thinking of, but if I am going to have the same problem, then I may have to just do french knots. Is there any stitches that would look right? I am doing (A51) 'Put if o…

Theres that one that looks sorta like a figure 8 when you make it and then when you pull it, it looks like the knot. bit if you don't like the look, how about adding beads? Delicas are the nicest and most evenly sized. My favorite place to buy bead…

Bullion knot is said to be easier

You might be thinking of a colonial knot. Some people consider it a little easier to do than a French knot. But I think it would have the same downsides as the French knot or beads for your purposes: Colonial Knot How are the French Knots used on…

Profile Information

What aspect of textiles are you interested in?
I love cross stitch and I am very interested in the new ways of displaying them. I have just found blackwork and I am looking into ways to modernise it.
Where did you learn your textle skills?
Self Taught.
I started at the age of 6 or 7 with the sides of cereal boxes and my mum's left over wool from her knitting. With a large tapestry needle I would create line pictures. Sadly all of these were lost when we got damp in our cellar.
Anything else you want to say to introduce yourself to the group??
I'll try anything once!

Tutorials

I will be creating tutorials for the projects that I am doing. I am currently creating an english tutorial for 15-sided Biscornu. These will be displayed on my website (to be created) and linked from my blog. I am willing to try anything once. If there is a project that you are interested in and can't understand the instructions, I may be able to help. I am not multilingual and rely on pictures. Just contact me, with a link to the project and I'll let you know if I can help.
