What aspect of textiles are you interested in?
I love making dolls and any form of Primitive sewing such as Extreme Primitive stump dolls. I am also interested in hand embroidery, cross stitch, primitive stitchery. In fact it would be safe to say that I am a complete textile arts freek who will make anything when the mood takes me. From curtains, clothes and crocheting to rag dolls, soft toys and Santa sacks. I love it all. I've recently starting working on my own designs too but they are still in the embyonic stage as yet. Only time will tell where my art will take me next. The only thing I don't like doing is knitting, it takes too long to make anything and I find it difficult being left handed and having been taught to knit by my Dad when I was 4 years old and he was right handed. Oh, I look a real sight when I'm knitting, one pin tucked under my left arm and the other pin balanced in the middle of my chest!!
Where did you learn your textle skills?
Self taught over the last 50 odd years
Anything else you want to say to introduce yourself to the group??
I love working with textiles and creating my dolls and other things. I've been crafting since I was 4 years old, which is more than 50 years now and have only recently begun to market some of my work. I always find it so hard to sell my dolls as I become very attached to them but, it's either that or sell my partner because we need the room. When I'm not sewing, which I seem to do about 16 hours a day at the moment as I am trying to set up myself in my own business, my other great passions are reading, mainly biographies and psychology text books (I am also busy working towards an honors degree in Psychology with the OU) and I also love cooking. It's a good job I have a patient partner as he does most of the work around the house to leave me free to "create my little things" to sell.

New Toy to play with

I'm feeling so lucky today, my daughter bought me a new sewing machine yesterday and it was delivered today. It's absolutely fantastic and can do all sorts of different things. It can be used for quilting, embroidery, monogramming and the most useful thing for me is that it can overlock and do straight stitch all at the same time. I'd only had the old machine for a year but it was beginning to show signs of the strain of being used for upwards of 8 hours a day. The new one is industrial quality… Continue

Rain, rain and even more rain

So much for thinking we were having an Indian Summer. Since Monday it has rained non stop and the drains are having difficulty coping with the sheer volume of water that is cascading down the high street. I live halfway up the hill so as yet we've not had any problems with the rain but the poor souls at the bottom are in danger of being flooded.

I love your dolls. I did make a few dolls over the years, but my hands won't let me stuff any longer. BUt ti doesn't keep me from looking. I especially like the doll in the pink outfit.
Are they your designs?

Sorry to tell you this Pam, but here in the South (Oxford to be precise) we have been enjoying an Indian Summer and it looks set to continue for most of the weekend. It's just like last year, a wet miserable summer followed by a glorious Autumn.

Hi Pam: glad they have arrived: the hexagons ("english patchwork") were what started me off many years ago: I still have the pincushion a friend made me: if you need one, sew the 2halves together and stuff with wadding. I like to have a few of these to take on holiday and have accumulated quite a few hexagon flowers: maybe one day they will turn into a quilt. The template is cut from an old x-ray plate and the papers are old magazines, fairly thin...just to get you going. Most of my quilts are lap-sized...they still take me ages to get finished. I find the tips in P&Q are useful (they repeat the pages in each issue) and both have great patterns. I now subscribe to both P&Q and Popular Patchwork and have plenty more older issues to pass on some time. Enjoy the table runner challenge: daughters seem to know what they want...XX Gill
