Profile Information

What aspect of textiles are you interested in?
I am a needlepoint/jewelry designer. I was born in Israel and have lived in Tel Aviv, San Francisco Bay Area, Michigan, before moving to Philadelphia. The different cultures, climates, sounds and scenes of these places have influenced my vision and perceptions.
I studied art, majoring in painting, as well as ceramics, interior design and photography. My art education is an ongoing process which gives me much pleasure.
Color is my greatest fascination. Design and architecture have always intrigued me and my use of geometric shapes is what I bring from that love. My work is meant to bring pleasure, first to the senses, then to the mind. When the senses are stimulated, the mind will work all the better.
I began designing needlepoint pieces that give the observer a taste of the colors, textures and shapes that fibers can produce. Touch the needlepoint and you will get yet another sensation. The combinations are endless. Take the same colors but change the shapes, take the same shapes, yet change the texture. Each of the combinations produces a different "feel", at times ancient, at times foreign and at times warm and familiar. I enjoy the challenge of giving the stitcher something new.
Where did you learn your textle skills?
I am self taught.
Anything else you want to say to introduce yourself to the group??
I consider myself so very lucky to have a love of art and design.

I have completed a redo of my entire website and I'm just thrilled with the results. There is a section of HOW TO which has free downloads for different stitches. AND...a free needlepoint design just added to the HOW TO called Taltul. Check it out: www.ornadesign.com

Orna, I went to your website and came across the instructions for the needlepoint brooch. I wanted to try making it, but i wondered what size thread I would use. I have some skeins of perle cotton size 5.. what do you think?

Thank you for your lovely comment. I am enthralled again by your photos. Gorgeous colours! I enjoy diverse types of embroidery although I am sure I would achieve more if I specialised. I find the surface stitchery stimulating and the counted thread work relaxing. These days I work the surface stitchery during the day and by the time I sit down at night the counted work is all I can cope with. I do enjoy it all.

I first saw your work in a magazine article some years ago and loved it so it was a real treat to see the photos you have posted here. I especially love your use of colour. Beautiful!

Quite a few years ago one of my aunts said she would have to live to be 150 to make everything she wanted to, and I thought she must have a very short list! Needlepoint is one of the things on my list, about as far away as quilting on yours. At least you will have some designs ready to work with.
Thank you for your comment about the humour in my work. If it wasn't fun I wouldn't do it, and I find most people who work with their hands have a wonderful sense of humour and are more than ready to share some fun.

Orna, I love your designs. I design quilts and I tend to see quilt designs everywhere, and many of your designs look like quilts waiting to happen! Many would translate perfectly into applique.

Oh, my! I am so flattered to have someone who creates designs like your incredible designs comment on my page! I have long admired your designs and, most especially, your color sense. I look to you for inspiration. Marjorie
