Profile Information

What textiles are you interested in?
I've been crazy quilting off and on for the past 8 years. I'm really interested in learning more hand embroidery stitches and improving on my current base of embroidery skills. I am interested in learning from others and pursuing these arts in a more artistic fashion.
I also dabble in extremely basic crochet, occassional leatherwork and beading.
Where did you learn your textile skills?
My late step-grandmother introduced me to embroidery at the age of 8. I still remember the little girl I stitched onto a tea towel while sitting in her parlour one summer day. From there I graduated to cross-stitch into my teens. When I discovered crazy quilting in my late 20s I never looked back.
Is there anything else you'd like other members of Stitchin' Fingers to know about you? Please feel free to tell us a little bit about yourself by way of introduction.
Seeing other's work is very inspirational and it is fun to find some kindred spirits here.
Oh, and as much as I love the creative expression allowed in embroidery, that love does not translate to quilting! Hand-quilting is for the birds! Actually, I'm just disappointed it does not give me the same enjoyment because it's such amazing work!

A passion for paisleys!

Posted on March 21, 2009 at 14:03 6 Comments

Hi everyone!

I thought I would add a few photos of other paisleys I've made using the same pattern on my tutorial, but with a variety of stitches, beads and sre.

Below is a paisley with Sassa Lynn thread size 5 for bullion stitch loops. But first, to make the paisley outline, I drew my paisley design and then did buttonhole stitch. I really like the way the lines of the buttonhole give that nice interior design to the outer edge. Inside each bullion loop is a cultured… Continue

Hi everyone!

After posting a couple photos of my beaded paisley on CQInternational yahoo group I was asked by Jo (New Zealand) to write up a tutorial. Funny, because I had already planned to do one. Ah, I love how great minds think alike!

Anyway, here it is:

Hello Michelle, your work is stunning, your stitchwork is really inspirational, I thoroughly enjoyed your photos. You are quite inventive in the way you combine stitches and I hope to expand my own knowledge of stitchwork as an example. Loved your tutorial on the paisleys, they are amazing, I've always fancied it as a pattern but had never thought of making my own. I also like the way you used tassels and created 3D hangings, so pretty. I shall be coming back to visit often. Kind Regards Mandy Currie

Hi Dakotah. I have just looked at your photos and am in awe of your work. I also love the paisley tutorial. I have a lovely book "Turkish Delights to Applique" by Linda M Poole, and I will use this tutorial with some of the projects in this book. Hopfully some photos will follow later of the finished embroideries. Claire

Thank you so much for your nice comments, Michelle.I'm happy you like some of my work :)

About hydrangeas pincushion: I've made french knots in a linen square and made the little pillow; aside I've made more french knots in little round pieces of linen, living a little border for passing a thread and pull and so I got little balls of french knots and attached them to the pincushion... all this make any sense to you? :)

sorry my bad English...

Sorry I haven't sent your birthday card. I think it would be good if we could get a reminder at the beginning of each month.I am sure it was not intentional that we haven't sent you one. I'll see to it today.

Hi Michelle, I haven't got any books on fabric collage, but I have some on Machine Embroidery. Many years ago I did classes where we were taught some fabric collage ideas.
Bonnie McCaffery has a book Fantasy Fabrics which I saw at the library years ago.She showed how to trap fabrics (all sorts) beneath briday tulle, sheers etc and machine stitch(feed dogs down etc), over the top with metallic thread etc. Would you like to e-mail me at kevin.mccarthy@elected.portenf.sa.gov.au and we can chat more.
This is a great way to "free up" and just experiment.Just to see what happens.
