"Fabulous! I was lucky enough to live in Guildford when I was studying at the Guildhall in London when I was much younger. As an American, I thought (and still do!) is was such a romantic old city. This piece is a real treasure for the city!"

What textiles are you interested in?
Hand embroidery
Where did you learn your textile skills?
Royal School of Needlework
Is there anything else you'd like other members of Stitchin' Fingers to know about you? Please feel free to tell us a little bit about yourself by way of introduction.
I am stitching a 3 metre x 1 metre wall hanging for the town of Guildford in freestyle using silk shading, stumpwork, applique and ribbonwork.
I stitch every minute I am not working/cooking/gardening/clearing up for others!!
Its my main pleasure and source of creative expression and I love to use a mixture of painting and stitching in a lot of my work.

The Guildford Embroidery

If you live vaguely in the Guildford area and would like to be part of the Guildford Embroidery contact me now. I am creating a very large wall-hanging for the town of Guildford, 9' by 3' plus a frieze, in mixed media, stumpwork, silk work but principally freestyle.

The Guildford Embroiderers Guild have join us and we now have 30 plus ladies and one gent, work on this project which is destined for the new Civic Hall (opening 2011) to be hung and opened by (hopefully somebody with a tiara) in 2012.

All materials presented in kit form and can be stitched at home on a good frame, ready for applique later.

If you would like to come to one of our monthly meetings (first Sat of every month) get in contact with me. It is fun, interesting and challenging but no time pressure as we all have other lives!

First exhibition of stitch pieces 27th Feb 2010

Posted on February 27, 2010 at 16:30 1 Comment

Saturday 27th February 2010

It's taken a while for me to come back here as we have been VERY busy preparing and finishing our work for the first interim exhibition for the GE.

It was a mad rush to get it altogether for the day, in the end it turned out to be a very positive expo, and worthwhile.

The day started with a drizzle, but fully laden the first good sign of the day was a true gent who stopped me…

November meeting

Posted on November 9, 2009 at 11:31 0 Comments

Saturday 7th November 2009

No fireworks today, just a bunch of wonderful buildings and signs marching through the door, some finished but all progressing very well.

The clinic went well, each week confidence growing, less concerns, bigger smiles, and a feeling that we can definitely achieve this now. Some are even going on to their second building, and there is talk of starting something green and interesting.

Personally, I have grown fond of all those funny… Continue

October Meeting

Posted on October 19, 2009 at 7:00 0 Comments

Saturday 3rd November 2009

A steady flow of embroideries accompanied by their owners came through our doors, mostly very optimistic and in bouyant form as good progress bolstered weary fingers.

I took photos of some of the works in progress which I have loaded today, showing good signs of nearing completion.

We held our usual clinic, ironing out the usual small snags, mainly due sometimes to lack of confidence and not due to lack of… Continue

Tracing the Background

Tuesday 8th September 2009

For the second time I have traced out the bones of the main photoshop and marked out the strategic areas of sky, grass, road and river. Lets hope this fits now.

I have made the overall size another 3 inches deep, as the sky appeared cramped, and we still have to find space enough for all 23 parish symbols.

We now have five finished pieces, four of which are buildings, and being smaller now, the fit is going to be easier than… Continue

Major Crisis

Posted on September 7, 2009 at 6:30 0 Comments

Saturday 5th September 2009

Our meeting was well attended today, with many members turning up with their hard worked pieces, and all of them fantastic and very different to each other.

After our usual clinic, problem solving and photographs of WEP, the cold buffet went down well and the giant slate frame was given its audience to tremendous applause. Unfortuantely the tressles had not yet arrived so Rhoda and I were unable to proceed with the next phase of painting… Continue

Kristina,

Thank you so much for your offer to pick up some leaflets for me at the RSN. I am going to ask you to wait awhile please. You have given me a lot to think about concerning the different directions that can be pursued there. I must go in and study their web site. I really don't know how long I could stay at the RSN. Probably just long enough to take a class for a week or so. I don't think I want to teach, so I can't really justify getting a certificate. Assuming that is why people get them.

I have a good friend in London that I will be staying with when I come over. She is a barrister and she stays very busy. She has told me I can stay as long as I like so if I wanted to go to the RSN we could arrange the details. Meaning we could have a week or so of site seeing and I could going on staying with her while I went to classes. I thought this some what of an imposition and may look into places to stay near Hampton Court Palace. You know the old saying about fish and house guests.

Your EG project is fascinating. I just love it. You may be living my dream life living in that charming cottage and being so close to the RSN. English brick and timber construction is my architectural favorite. Are they doing your new addition in the old way? It would be wonderful to watch. If you tell me you also have one of those wavy roofs or a thatched one, I am going to turn a light shade of green. ;)

Does MD stand for Managing Director? You must be looking forward to the day when your time is all your own. How wonderful it will be to have a new studio right there at home.

Thank you for all your very kind comments about my work.

Hi Kristina,

I can see your work is of an advanced level. It is so wonderful! You have inspired me to want to stitch a building. I love how technical yours is.
I am actually a metalsmith I work with non-ferrous metals. Everyone wants to know when I tell them that what I make. I have made one inch to the foot scale miniatures for collectors for many years. Some might call them things for doll houses but the things I make are really for high end adult collectors. My partner and I made a silver service for the Navy. It was for the USS Tennessee nuclear submarine. It was a commission that came through the TN State Museum. The state of TN wanted to give a gift of a handmade sterling silver coffee and tea service. All sea going vessels have a silver service. This one was small because every square inch on a submarine is planned for. I have a MFA (Masters of Fine Arts degree).
Yes, I designed the fairies. Their faces are no bigger than your fore finger nail. The one on the dark navy silk was published in Inspirations magazine # 57 (Country Bumpkin publisher) as a project for their readers. The Kilmouski needle case is also my design. A caricature of my cat by the same name. The White Rabbit came from a black and white illustration in one of my antique Alice in Wonderland books.OOPS, I see you have commented on that. PHEW I don't think I could face stitching another White Rabbit. I have so many things I want to stitch next and time is limited because of work but thank you so much for asking!!!
I have a lot to learn. I have only been stitching for four years. There is no where to take a class in embroidery where I live. I am longing to take a class, to learn all the things books never tell you about. No one I know here does any surface hand embroidery at all. We have a few cross stitcher's and a lot of woman that do canvas needlepoint but that's it.
I am really looking forward to my trip to England next summer. I could spend a week looking around at the V&A.

I have gone to your page and looked at all of your photos. Your pieces are just wonderful and so beautifully stitched. Since something was too technical for others, I assume you are teaching. Lucky you to have had the chance to study at RSN. I would love to go there. Next summer hopefully and visit the V&A too.

After commenting on a couple of your photos I realized that I love them all! Pieces like what you have done are the reason I have wanted to learn Stumpwork. There are so many fascinating results! How wonderful to have the opportunity to learn at RSN!

What beautiful work you do! I especially like your Griffon crewel piece (but I'm on a crewel kick right now)!

I WISH I lived near Guilford so I could help with the hanging! Keep us posted as you get new photos of it! Always on the lookout for new eye candy.

Hi Kristina, welcome to Stitchin Fingers. I have had a quick look at your work and I can't wait for work to finish so I can have a longer look at them all.

How fortunate you are to have studied at the Royal School of Needlework.
