Those are really cute, and would definitely come in handy with something like a bird thimble holder. I keep saying I am going to make the one from my Elizabethan Needlework Accessories book, one of these days...

I always enjoy reading that blog, and in particular when there is something useful that I can compare my own work to. Thanks for pointing this out. :)

I added a comment to your blog, Beth Lea, but I'll say again here how excited I am to see your mention of 3 types of trellis stitch, and very much look forward to more 'how to'. Your piece of work is just *gorgeous*. So textural!

Hi to all! here is a link to pictures of my efforts with Trellis stitch http://trellisstitch.blogspot.com/ know exactly what you mean about diagonal or vertical rendition... Here's diagram that I managed to source back in June. Beth

Kimberley, The sampler is Catherine Theron's Examplar IV, and is the same one on which I used the spiral trellis that inspired the tutorial on my blog. Did you try clicking on the picture? It should come up larger. You may want to practice with t...

hmmmm I will have to try it that way. I have to admit that I am using the GST for this little project at the moment, and it is very querelous about going through through tightened loops! I have been using the up method and will try the down method...

I use the method described in Mary's tutorial, but I do end up with slanted stitches (see the strawberries on the left of the picture in this blog post), with each row slanted opposite the row above, forming a woven effect. I think I tighten each ...

Mary Corbet has a video tutorial on her Needle'n'Thread site. I think she is stitching what you refer to as the down method and refers to the twisting thread in her notes.

My Nicholas books are apparently in one of the dozens of unpacked shipping boxes that hold my household goods. I received them two weeks ago but my progress has been slow at best, and I have rooms full of boxes yet to get through. Our packers in E...

Well, I tried using perle as well as GST, so I really can't say if this was the problem or not. I guess I will give that more consideration. Thanks!

I have found Jane Nicholas' instructions to be extremely well written. However, I still can't have anyone talk to me while I stitch it! Let me try to remember to get a pic of the project I did with it.

I wonder if the knotted mess was related to the twist in the thread. I suspect that the up method works best threads with a S-twist (such as cotton perle) and the down method works best with a Z-twist in the same way you have to wrap bullion stitc...

I am working on another needlebook and am using Tricia's instructions on some gillyflower petals. I will post photos as soon as I am finished. I am just curious about how different people do this stitch. Tricia does it by going up and Mary does it...

I'm interested in this - I've tried it, and given up on it as something that needs more time that I had available.

Profile Information

What aspect of textiles are you interested in?
Taking historical designs from the Elizabethan and Jacobean era and utilizing them in both accurate reproductions and modern items.
Where did you learn your textle skills?
My great -grandmother Gertrude taught me my first embroidery stitches when I was seven, and I imagine she did it to keep me occupied when i would visit for the weekend. I turned to my embroidery again in my 30's and am primarily self-taught in the Elizabethan and Jacobean techniques that I am studying and implementing.
Anything else you want to say to introduce yourself to the group??
I am always interested in helping embroiderers to learn plaited braid stitch, and also enjoy learning new techniques from others.

V&A Pics

I am trying to comply with the terms in the V&A image licensing agreement so that I can post the images I took while there earlier this month. I currently have the images up on a private Picasa page, which nobody can view without the authorization key. I put them up so that the V&A people could see what I was going to do and to assure them that my intentions were authentic.

The images are protected so that nobody can capture them, print them or copy in any way, but apparently the V&… Continue

Hello Kimberley

Sorry it has taken me so long to accept you as a friend. I have been very busy lately and haven't had much time to get onto the computer and indulge! I can see we have very similar interests and thank you for your lovely comments about my goldwork. Goldwork is my main passion but like most embroiderers I put my had to lotsm of different styles of embroidery. In fact I have just purchased a Jane Zimmerman Eklizabethan design - The Art of Elizabethan Embroidery Silk & Metal Panel". I have read it thoroughly and am just trying to finish of a nmumber of other projects before I get started.

Kimberley. Thank you for your comment about "Bluebell Woods". I am also in the Stumpwork Group and two or three others, and am also a devotee of Elizabethan and Jacobean work. I see you live in St.Columb Minor. I spent 6 weeks there in the latter part of the war and loved every minute of it. I believe it has completely changed nowadays. When I was there it was a tiny village with perhaps one or two streets. Another thing we have in common is an interest in Plaited Braid Stitch and other relatively now unknown stitches. This is a great website and you will find all sorts of interesting things that stitchers do. Grace

Hi Kimberly, I know that I said hello in the discussion, I just wanted to welcome you properly to Stitchin Fingers. I see that you have already joined the Stumpwork and Raised Embroidery group and started an Elizabethan and Jacobean group. I look forward to getting to know about you and your work and hopefully seeing some pictures of it.
