I am interested in fabric, period! I am obsessed with sewing, particularly hand embroidery right now. I make costumes, clothes and wearable art. I have recently started to use free motion machine embroidery in my work as well.
Where did you learn your textile skills?
I have a degree in Costume for the Screen and Stage, but I have been sewing for as long as I can remember. I was taught originally by my mother and grandmothers.
Is there anything else you'd like other members of Stitchin' Fingers to know about you? Please feel free to tell us a little bit about yourself by way of introduction.
Hello! My name is Joanne, I am a fiber mixed media artist in the Uk. By day I am a wardrobe supervisor on cruise ships so my life is pretty creative all round. One day I would like to make my living solely through my art and am in the process of working towards that goal. Any advice for budding fibre artists is much appreciated!
Hi Joanne! Ooh, was eyeing the cupcake last night...and here you are! Thanks for the comments...happy that you enjoyed some of my work.
No, not doing the Sketchbook Project anymore, seemed a bit of a rip-off, having to pay to participate, having to buy ordinary Moleskines from them, which are no different from the Moleskines I could buy here (and I don't like using Moleskines, in the first place), and the fact that participation is so homogenized/regulated...goes against the openness, individuality, and 'accessible-to-all' spirit that—for me—is at the heart of being creative. But that's just my personal take, please don't take to heart. :)
