Stitch or stitches to create pine cones

I'm trying to create pine cones and not finding a stitch or stitches to create pine cones. I would really appreciate any ideas.

"Use silk ribbon. I have made some beautiful pine cones with SR. I will try to post a picture of one under my photos if you are interested in what they look like. Just give me a day or two. SR makes it pretty easy."

"I checked in my ribbon embroidery book and the ones in it (birds, butterflies and flowers) are just done with a strait stitch laid back and forth across each other geting smaller. "

I started with my grandmother,and through the years took lessons and taught myself

I'm excited to find this group. In the Pacific Northwest there are a few needlework groups and not I'm reaching out to the network.
