"Carol, this is not a counted thread technique but surface stitching therefore the fabric is not counted.  The fabric is a light-weight calico (muslin to some of you)  and the threads are 2 strands of stranded cotton, and the silver thread…"

Ribbonwork Pincushion

Posted on May 16, 2011 at 6:05 0 Comments

Thank you for your comment Di.  I made the pattern for this myself.  It s just a circle with scallops cut away from the sides and three ribbonwork flowers gathered in the centre with shaded ribbons.  The rest of it is worked with ribbon stitches out from the centre with green stems and detached chain stitches.  Then I added free French Knots around the centre stitches.  Feel free to use the design if  you wish.  Grace

Stumpwork Leaves

Posted on April 9, 2009 at 8:37 0 Comments

As there is some discussion on the Stumpwork Group's page as to whether you should use Buttonhole Stitch or Overcasting on the edges, I am posting a photo of my leaves worked with overcasting stitch. I did the first one absolutely right and because of rushing made an error in the colour of the central vein in the second leaf. I don't think I am going to worry about it. So far I haven't added the side veins. Grace

Hallo everybody, I have only just joined this group. My name is Grace and I am a dedicated embroideress. I love almost every embroidery technique and also do a small amount of patchwork. I am also interested in the history of embroidery and am really dedicated to working and using old little-known stitches. Does any one else feel that some of the stitches we used to use are almost unknown today? On the other hand I also love to experiment with some of the new things we have nowadays - Angelina… Continue

Thank you Grace,  I am really happy that you have asked me to be your friend.  Yes, i think that we have a lot of common interests.  I do please, ask you nicely, to spell my name correctly.  Sorry to be sensitive about it, but I am.  All good wishes    Ann

Hello Grace,  You are so right.  A good piece of embroidery can be ruined by not knowing when to stop.  And knowing that, is one of the ultimate and unanswerable questions.  A good friend will tell you but it is then up to you, to listen. which your friend did not do.  I am now working on my next book and as it features summer gardens, this is a timely reminder to 'stop, when enough is achieved".  Thank you Grace for making me conscious of that today as it is todays essential lesson.  Hope that spring has arrived in Somerset.  Such a beautiful area of England.  I see that you are not far from Glastonbury.  enjoy,  Ann B.

Hello Grace, I am so sorry that it has taken so long to get back to you........

I am just recovering from a 'Gastric Flu' bug, which has knocked the stuffing out of me !

That last embroidery photo you sent me was rather charming........But you are right,

Its all been done before ! I am contemplating doing an 'Assisi ' piece and knowing what an accomplished embroideress you are, I wondered what sort of colour scheme to use !

Your suggestions would be invaluable.........I do hope you are keeping well Grace and enjoying your stitching !

Speak soon

hugs

Chris Richards

Hello Grace, I received the pictures of the other two embroideries (chen Yang ,pien fu)

Are'nt they stunning......We dont really get kits that are as beautiful as these anymore !! Maybe we should start a campaign to bring back some of the older designs !

Thank you Grace for showing an interest...its fascinating to hear about these designs and their history.......I would dearly have loved to do these companion pieces........xx

Hello Grace,I had no idea that 'Kwan tung' was an older kit......It is what I call my 'ongoing

project' ! I have just finished the top flowers and am on the tail feathers now......However did you manage to do this kit SIX times...You must have the patience of jobe !!!

Anyway Grace, thank you for telling me about your 'love affair with 'KWAN TUNG' and do you know what the name means ? I've tried searching for a translation but all I can find is 'the kwan tung army' and I am sure its nothing to do with that....thought you might know !

Thank you once again Grace...fascinating stuff.........xxx

Hi Grace, Thankyou for your comments on my cathedral rose window. I needed something to remember it by & what better way of doing it than stitching?! I have been in the Guild for nearly 25 years & am Past President after being on the committee for 8 years. Then after that I convened a public exhibition of our work. I also became a tutor teaching up & down the country at other guilds plus for the public. I have exhibited work at exhibitions as well winning awards & completely amazing myself!!! Like you say, we do seem to have similar tastes for embroidery & lace. It has been my salvation many times through my life including the quakes! I admire your work too & enjoy looking at other's work.

I have a blog page on www.myembroideryworld.blogspot which you may like to look at plus a web page on my niece's site www.pointy-ears.com/lyn

Enjoy!
