I use silamide thread. It's a waxed nylon thread that you can buy from the Bead Smith or from crazy beader Nancy Eha. Nancy's website is www.beadcreative.com.

I'm self taught.I learn most of my skills from books and now the internet.There are so many good sites and blogs that are so generous with their knowledge.

Hello Elaine. The thing with JE is not so much the stitches but handling the silk and there is no substitute for having someone guide you through that. Have you looked at the list of tutors on the JEC. If there is one in your area perhaps they would be willing to travel to you.
Have you heard of Helen M Stevens, who does lovely silk embroidery, but not Japanese, more needle painting. Helen does online classes, including a free taster class, on her website.
