Hi Christa,
Thankyou for your kind words about my work.
I am loving how your design for the challenge is developing and am looking forward to posting my design this week when time allows. So will definitely appreciate some feedback when that happens. And I love for people to be brutally honest as it is the only way to learn, so don't hold back.
I have a couple of friends coming from interstate in two weeks to do their phase 4 beading with my tutor, and I will be stitching alongside them, continuing on my Crane, so may have some progress photos then. Even though I work best in quiet on my own, it is always great to get together with other stitchers - it is always a fun time and it keeps the motivation going.
What independent phase study were you planning?
By the way - I absolutely adore the autumnal colours of your Sake Boxes. I am a real 'autumn' person.
Cheers for now,
Iris

Hi Christa,
Love your photos. I have always wanted to do Hiogi Fan, but did Suehiro and Ven Friends instead. Have finally just completed phase 4 Embroidery Sculpture. Even though I loved stitching it, I had put it aside for a while as it was a rather epic piece (376 hours), and stitched other pieces for some relief. Maybe, I should have done Karahana instead. That is also very beautiful and I love the box couching on the petals.
Just put in my first stitches on phase 8 Crane with Reeds the other day - yippee. I love starting a new piece.
Now, to catch up with your design blog....
Cheers,
Iris

Been too long!

Hello fellow Stitchin Fingers members! Sorry to have been away from posting to my blog for a little while. One of my favorite sayings is "Life gets in the way of your plans" and that has certainly been true for me. Nothing too exciting to tell other my career has kept me very busy these past weeks with lots of travel. Now that the holidays are near things are calming down and I'm looking forward to getting back to JE stitching.

I should interupt myself here and explain that there was one really… Continue

Challenge Piece has a name....

sometimes the design tells you the name right off the bat, other times you have to wait for for it to speak to you. Today, one of the inspiration designs let me in on this little secret. This site not only gave me a glimpse into how the background fabric will affect the design but also gave me the name of a Japanese Bush Warbler: "Uguisu".

Plum in Japanese is "Ume".

Inspiration and Color

Now that I have a design in mind its time to find inspiration with a theme and color. For this project I went through all of my Japanese Embroidery and general embroidery books to pick up ideas. Because plum and the bush warbler are both symbolic of spring, it was very easy to choose it as the theme. Also, although I am very attached to fall colors I am currently working Saki Boxes in fall colors so it will be a nice break to work in what I consider the opposite colors - pastels.

JE Stitch Challenge 2009 - Design

The JE Group Challenge -- Design

The challenge piece gives us the option of incorporating one or more fans provided. We can use all or one of them, make them larger, smaller, and have creative license with color and patterns with a preference of traditional Japanese techniques. This challenge immediately piqued my creative side and the need to take a small rest from the phase piece SakeContinue
