Thank you Ladies:)

Yes, Queenie. We can say it is folklore romance. The "Valentine's" ( as I call it) or Lenços de Namorados, (as we say in portuguese) is a essencial part of the popular art and tradition in the North of Portugal (Minho region).

"Lenços de Namorados" are introduced as the most genuine poetic and artistic form used by the young girls of Minho to express thier feelings when they were about to reach the age of the marriage, and aspired to win their fiancés hearts. They were for most part square shaped linen or cotton made and embroidered according to the taste of each embroideress, as a part of the female attire they had other purpose: the proof of the embroideresses devotion towards the men they were in love. In other words:

Young girls used to stich it ("scribling" funny writting with lots of ortographic errors) and give it to their boyfriends-to-be. If the boy accepted the gift, they would start dating, otherwise...

This one in the pictures was a recent wedding gift, but usually as stitch Lenços de Namorados just for fun :)
