This a smocked pillow. The stitches look like tiny beads and colours were chosen to appeal to my daughter, and the remaining black areas were back-smocked in black thread! The design was inspired by the sole of a shoe, although it didn't actually look at all like this.

I see what you mean, Ann, as it is contemporary and inspired by the sole of a shoe. It must have been hard working on black material with black thread. It looks very effective though, like the last rays of a sunset against the hills.
