Not embroidery, but a fair bit of handwork, especially on the folded ribbon trim on the skirt. More on making the point trim here: http://www.string-or-nothing.com/2012/05/15/STEAMPUNKSATURDAY.aspx

It was close enough that we attempted a long waisted walking skirt, shirtwaist, small vest, hat and drawstring bag. Many outfits are more "steamy punk" than steampunk, with lots of exposed corsets, and absurdly short bustled skirts. But the kid is 14, and that's not appropriate.
Stunning outfit, and I agree, an awful lot of work.
Comment by Nicola Thomson on May 16, 2012 at 19:34 ok never heard of it...thanks.so this costume is back to the 1890s??
Comment by kbsalazar on May 16, 2012 at 19:31 The premise of steampunk is more or less late Victorian fantasy. It started with a couple of science fiction books that were set in a circa 1880s-1890s world that invented the computer and other modern devices, but as offshoots of steam rather than electric technology. Think Jules Verne, but with an overlay of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage. It's all wheels, gears, lenses, and brass.

This is adorable. What a lot of work. I love all of the little details you have added.
Here in NZ we have a Steampunk town called Oamaru. They have steampunk festivals and some people get into the spirit all year round. It's rather wonderful! I thought you might like to see some pics of some of the costumes on the festival site: http://www.steampunknz.co.nz/ I have never been, as it is at the bottom of the South Island and I am in the North (cheaper for me to fly to Australia than get to Oamaru!), but one day ...
