Yes, dorset buttons are made on rings, wrapped with threads. I will be adding a photo or two of some dorsets that I and two friends just made a few weeks ago. Two of us used pearl cotton, the other use crochet thread. I do not know exactly what type of thread is used for these antiques, but yes, they are indeed made with thread.

These belong to my friend who has an incredible button collection. I wonder if the book is the same one I have, the author's first name is Nancy. I just made a couple of dorset buttons with friends and will post a photo later.
I really enjoyed making them.

These are fantastic vintage buttons! I have a book which has a chapter on making these types of buttons - very interesting!
