About gimp, can also be used to fill areas, couched like Japanese or passing gold thread, like was done in the lion  Thistle Thread project.

Buckram is usually available in hat shops. It is sometimes used for a hat base. Otherwise try a local craft shop - it is used for "fasinators".

Please do!

Where did you find the reference to Buckram?

Comment by Maryd on October 4, 2011 at 5:33
Done some more research on slips. Seems they were made of Buckram, which is stiff, slightly course linen. I got some, so with the aid of modern technology, aim to print out my own slip sheet, if the plan works, I will let you all know!

OK.... back to gimp.

What can it be used for?

* Outlining slips

* a textural thread, as shown in the castle piece that Francesca showed? The photo had to go - wasn't it used to delineate parts of the chimney or something

Anything else? Something about the Glittering Snail?

Lovely work Susan.  As Carol-Anne says it looks like Chinese Lanterns.  On the previous subject I have always thought of gimps as either the same as Bourdon thread or very similar.  Does anyone know the difference?

It is gorgous.  It reminds me of Chinese Lanterns.  Really well done!
