I had seen the tutorial Elmsley Rose provided the link for. . .but didn't end up trying it.  Has anyone attempted making their own using this technique?  I did ask Tricia Nguyen about making gimp by hand (I was working on her mermaid's grotto piece at the time), and she indicated it was very difficult to do without a spinning wheel (which is what she used to make the candy striped gimp for her mermaid class).  So I know it can be made with a spinning wheel. . .which of course, I do not have and do not know how to use. .. sigh. . . .

Yes, thank you so much! I plan on ordering some to play with this week. I've always wondered what gimp is, just never had the time to research it.

And from Gina Barrett :

"

Silken Strands do the finer stuff -

They don't have online ordering as such - you need to email and send money, so I don't know how easy that will be for anyone outside of the UK."

Stiching With A Shimmy points to an unfinished stumpwork casket today, from the V&A.

Second close up - is that gimp?
