HOW DO YOU GET STARTED?

The question for discussion is how do you approach the start of a scrumbling session? Do you usually have a specific project in mind? Do you scrumble to make wearables or home decor? Do you first pick interesting colors and textures of yarns and fibers? Do you begin with a theme or colorway? Do you start with a new technique or stitch or motif you're dying to try? Do you use freeform reference books or DVD's? Do you need something substantive like a challenge to get going, or are you able to play spontaneously?

I saw my first scrumble about a week ago. This is a fun way to use all those knitted and crocheted trials in my stash.

For my first scrumble I used a knitted border trial with leaves. I already started a second one.

What a gorgeous first scrumble!!!  The colors are pleasing in combination, and the variety of stitches (particularly inclusion of both knitted and crocheted motifs)  adds wonderful texture.

I created my First FF Crochet Coral Sponge this morning.  It took me 2 1/2 hours.  I used the book called,  Nicky Epstein's "Crochet Flowers".  I used the "SnowBall" pattern because to me it looked like a "Coral Sponge"! Just discovered freeform recently, and doubt I will ever use patterns again!  When I statrted at first i just studied pics of other 's scrumbles, tried to do similar stuff, Now I just crochet up something, a bullion circle, a spiral or whatever , then start to embelish, add new colors, maybe a bead or 2, and just let it "grow". What I like about crochet is how easy it is to simply unravel anything that doesnt look as I think it should.(I was going to say "my mistakes" but in freeform I guess we dont make "mistakes" per say,lol)

For those just beginning to do "scrumblesl" or aka free-form crochet, I highly recommend looking at the website of Sylvia Cosh and James Walters. It has a series of free downloadable pdf files on the various kinds of free-form crochet. I've found it invaluable. Go to the workshops page.
