Can needle point be used free hand for abstract art?

Definitely, either by taking and abstract design from say Picasso or anyone else and stitching with the a variety of fibers to bring out depth and texture.  Or by creating your on statement with a design, and fibers.

i cant see why it could not be as stitching is just drawing with thread ...

Yes yes yes...I use it for art pieces.Forget its canvas and use it like material,if its too stiff I spray with a little water to release the size(stiffening agent) from the canvas.
