Do you recognize this?

It is a free project from "Stitch" from some years ago, you can find it here: http://www.embroiderersguild.com/stitch/projects/encrustingcalico/i...
We, Deb and Marjolein, have admired that project ever since. Now we have decided to rush into this "Pebble Adventure".
Does anyone want to join us? We can share pictures and experiences here or provide links to blogs or flickr.

An exciting start. Do keep us posted. It's so nice to see photos of works in progress!

This is quite a different approach using many real pebbles in your project. I'm wondering if all of them will be covered with stitching, or if some of the pebbles will be peeking through your embroidery.

I'll be checking back to see your progress once I return from holidays.

Happy stitching everyone!

What a clever girl you are.....I am anxiously looking forward to see how you entrap those pebbles!

I started my desert pebble. The base is a CD. Here is a picture of some of the trapped items: beads in different sizes, a button and padding.

Most of the padding is meant to create a smoother transition from the trapped little pebbles to the surface. Other padding e.g. left of the three beads, is meant for difference in altitude.

Here are the little pebbles embedded in the padding. Some sides of the pebbles are not padded. These sides are very steep and I want te keep it that way.

I have no idea yet how it will turn out.

I am looking again at your photo....is this the bottom layer?  You will now put fabric over this layer?

Deb

What a great insight into how to do this...I havent started mine yet Im afraid

Yes, I will. Later today I'll show you.

Once you have started it is really fun. It is very different from other types of needlework and you will be surprised by the structures you get.

I will be watching and so will all the others that are eager to begin this adventure!

Deb

Here I have sewed the top fabric around a trapped pebble.

The pebble of the previous picture is under the fabric.

These beads will be trapped next. Behind the button you see some batting. Left of it will be another pebble. You can see its shape which I drew on the fabric. The batting creates a slope to the right. The left side is a steep slope.

All items are trapped. The trapped pebbles are supposed to be rocks/hills/mountains, so not all the sides are just as steep. I tried to achieve this by sewing  at different distances from the pebbles.

Here and there I also added more padding to get a sloping hill.

Looking good..I have started my  contouring too :)

Congratulations Marjolein you and your new pebble are featured on Craft Gossip!

Thank you Deb, I read it in the Craft Gossip newsletter.

Maybe more people will get interested in making a pebble.
