It is a free project from "Stitch" from some years ago, you can find it here: http://www.embroiderersguild.com/stitch/projects/encrustingcalico/i...
We, Deb and Marjolein, have admired that project ever since. Now we have decided to rush into this "Pebble Adventure".

If the baste stitches indicate the edge of your pebble, you will not have much wrinkle problems.

I finally got started yesterday.  Progress so far

Wow ladies!! I have had a fun morning looking through all these pictures.  Excellent work and so creative.  I sliced the end of my left thumb open day before yesterday (slicing onions) and it has bled for 2 days so I couldn't do any needlework with it (especially on white fabric!), but am hoping today that I will be able to get going.  Surely by Monday I will have something to show.  You don't realize how much you rely on your thumbs until you put them out commission!   You girls keep up the good work!

Beautiful work ladies.  I am still collecting and will get my fabric in order today.  I also need to address the thread.  I have some embroidery floss and some thicker thread, however it is all over the place so must round it all up and see what i have.  Am taking note of the stitches everyone is using and will try to find directions on the ones i have never done and see if I an do them.  Will report back when I have started.

Do you know, Donna, that you can find every possible stitch in SharonB's stitch dictionary:
http://inaminuteago.com/stitchindex.html. It is absolutely the unique and wonderful source of stitches.

I enjoy looking at all progress, it’s fun to see the different approaches.

I just had to add some stitches to my pebble today. So far I’ve used a whipped wheel, buttonhole bars, drizzle stitches, detached chain stitches and lots of French knots. The threads are DMC broder special, perle 5 and 8 in white, off-white and ecru.

Annet, it looks so good - and the detached chain stitches are a very good idea!

I really enjoy the texture and relief. The buttonhole bars look a bit like creepy creatures crawling from that donut shape.

Here is my embellishing so far.  I have added these stitches Bullion, Cup, Buttonhole Wheel, French Knot, Scatter, Detatched Buttonhole, Web and Needle Weaving.

Deb

That looks really good, Deb.

It is obvious that higher hidden items like the star on the right cause more wrinkles.

I think I had better started with hiding lower items.

Yes, that is the plastic six prong bead.  I have done very few stitches around where the wrinkles are. I will add more small french knots and some of the scatter stitches to help smooth those out.  I did rehoop both pieces of cloth after I enclosed the beads.  I rehooped and smoothed the fabric as best I could in the hoop and proceeeded to work the embroidery stitches.  I will post another photo after I work on that wrinkled bit.

Deb

That will be very interesting.

Tomorrow I plan to explore possibilities to smooth the fabric.

It is great to see all the beautiful progress you have made, ladies! Now I am even more looking forward to start working on my piece.

Am I right thinking that the idea is to catch the wrinkles between the low relief stitches? I imagine that would smoothen out the fabric.

These pebbles would make lovely broaches, too, don't you think?
