Wow, when I decided I wanted to try Hardanger, I did not know how scarce patterns would be.  I see some beautiful work, but trying to find a pattern to stitch is like GOOD LUCK.  I have collected a few books and magazines, but this particular hobby is limited, not like say knitting & crochet books or sewing books!

I am working on a piece I found out of the Burda Special Hardanger Magazine that I found on e-bay, and it is my first attempt.  I made the mistake of using size 5 pearl cotton on a 28 count fabric and I did not work over 2 threads, but one.  I am going to keep going because although the threads are tight, it doesn't look bad.

Oh well, I guess that is why Hardanger appeals to me because it is very unique and beautiful, and you know what they say...If it was easy, everyone would do it!

Lots of kits, individual patterns and books at www.nordicneedle.com - have fun!

I know, it's not easy to get a good pattern.

Maybe in a few month you will find a new book.

I finished my first hardanger book. It will be printed in October, in English, German and Türkish.

Hope you all will have a lot of fun.

Best wishes from Switzerland and happy stitching

Vera

I want to thank you for your reply, Vera and also to congratulate you on your first book!  That is very exciting.  Is there any chance we can purchase your book when it comes out?

Yes, I have ordered from Nordic Needle it's just difficult to see the pattern to see if that is one you want to stitch.

Thank you, Carroll for your reply!

Amanda, do you have the Janice Love books, Hardanger, and Fundamentals made Fancy? I love these books, use them for reference all the time, and they even have some nice designs in them too. Other than that, yes I agree it is hard to find good patterns. Emmy Bishop has a lot of patterns and a nice website. Don't have the url handy but you can google it. You can also find a lot of hardanger on google.

I have used #5 perle on 28 ct. You are right, it is a little tight but does work and sometimes I kind of like it that way. Hardanger is wonderful, and my favorite type of embroidery. Just keep on, you will learn it fast, and hope you have a lot of fun with it.

Yes I think so. I will let you know.

It's an international publisher. There will be basics and 44 different projects. They are working on the photographs now. In a few weeks I can tell you more.

Have a nice day

Vera

Cindy,

Thank you for the information.  I do not have a Janice Love book but I have them on my wish list!  I might try designing my own after doing a few more projects.

Hardanger Embroidery is probably my favorite needlework and the more I do the more I want to do!

Amanda

If you do a search on     HARDANGER EMBROIDERY PATTERNS FREE ONLINE      you will get quite a long list of websites, and quite a few have collected links to specific free patterns on other websites.  Also the 2 DMC pamphlets are available as free downloads from     http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/index.html

Amanda, I forgot one - Victoria Sampler, Thea Dueck's website, has some beautiful hardanger designs to buy, and quite a few free designs too. She also has some video tutorials for stitches which are really helpful. www.victoriasampler.com

Nordic Needle also have a large range of free downloads (over 30 last time I looked) at their "Save The Stitches" page (http://www.nordicneedle.net/) was the address I copied from the page, but I may have gotten it wrong.  The free dowloads range from book marks through to larger projects.

Amanda,

If you are going to try designing, then you really need the Janice Love books. There are templates in the back of the first book to use for designing, and also a section on design. It is really helpful. I started designing my own patterns before I got the books, but I still use them to this day. Also, if you start designing, you will probably want to know about computer software. Feel free to ask anything you want to know and I will be glad to help.

I agree, good clear patterns are hard to come by, especially when you're a beginner. Found that myself when I started out. It takes a good deal of thinking to design a pattern clear and understandable, clearly marked and not with stitches where people don't know where to put them.

Hardanger is really not so complicated, but patterns can be all over the place.

I also have started with Janice Love books. They are really good, but I also discovered I've started to do my own style of pattern drawing and techniques after a while. There is no bible, and sometimes no right or wrong.

Unfortunately my software is off the market, you can't buy it anymore. That's the same Vera Stoll and Marina Rosenberg use, and it still is today the best on the market. But as times go, developers stop just developing it, because the market is too small. I've also a Easygrapher stitch wiz (not the software but the stitch diagram software) I really like. It helps you drawing very clear diagrams, if you think about selling the patterns. It's a bit on the expensive site, but a good investment.
