I want to make an accordion (?zig-zag?) fabric book but can anyone help with the following questions?

What is the best way to do this? Should I make individual pages and stitch them together or should I make "dummy" pages and stitch onto one long length of background fabric?

What is the best way to either stiffen the pages or the joins so that the book stands up when opened out?

Perhaps someone could post a link to a good tutorial?

Many thanks for your help, Annette

happy new year!

some suggestions:

  • use a heavy material for substrate such as lutradur or use iron on interfacing on fabric
  • start by making a dummy on paper. work until you feel confident/ or get what you are aiming at
  • plan on using a whole lenght  of fabric and then folding it as it works much better than sewing together the pages
  • i would also recommend the book how to make books

  • from there on you can make many educated guesses
  • try you tube for tutorials

The structure of an accordian book relies on folds. I'd suggest making a paper accordian book with fabric inserts. A method for doing this is described in the 'The Found Object in Textile Art' by Cas Holmes.

Hi Annette When I have made one of these I make each page first simply because it is easier to sit and work on 1 page I use pelmet vilene to stiffen pages. I just join the pages together when they are all finished. Another good reason for doing this is I can add as many pages as I want when I want (especially if I get a new Idea ) and if I mess one up I can just not add it in. Just my take on this.

Thank you for all the good advice everyone. Hopefully our library as one of the books, and I know of a source of pelmet vilene. I will keep you posted on progress.
