Comment by Suzanne Campbell on March 26, 2013 at 12:22 I am currently doing the impossible - typing while bending forward in the middle. Would someone please give me a kick in the britches? Aaaargh! The cushon cover is almost finished - then I discovered a mistake I'd made in the last few rows of blocks (I'm doing it in traditional Gothic arch design) and suddenly that millimetre-size mistake has become a centimetre-sized one and thrown the whole pattern out of whack. I'll have to cut the offending bits out and do it again. I'm sorely tempted to stow it away until I stop cursing myself. But I've done that before it took months to dig it out and get on with the work. The pattern ranges in seven shades, from ecru through golden tones to darkest brown. I was thinking of calling it "Tiger, tiger burning bright" but now it seems like "Toast and Vegemite Dreaming". Australian members will understand this. The lesson learnt: Watch for tiny mistakes and correct them immediately before tiny becomes glaringly obvious. Also: more haste, less speed and concentrate.
Comment by Suzanne Campbell on February 27, 2013 at 23:26 Fiona, I'm so sorry about your bad news. I really understand how a major shock needs some time out, especially for such a busy person as you've been. Hope things are looking up for you and you'll soon have all those yarns and books in your new home and start stitching again. Maybe I'll catch up with you on the "hooked" group.
Comment by Fiona Audain on February 27, 2013 at 12:09 Hi Suzanne, for me life got in the way of getting any work done (crochet that is!) My DH had a massive heart attack which took me out of the scene for quite some time, I found I needed mindless crochet. Running a 7 day a week business & trying to sell the business and our house doesn't leave much time for anything! House and business SOLD (tick) moved back to Thames (tick) into rental accommodation so all my yarn and books are still packed away!!!
Comment by Suzanne Campbell on February 27, 2013 at 8:24 It's very quiet in here. Where is everyone? What happened to the complicated piece Larry was working on? I have just about finished a big cushion cover that I started a year or more ago. It's such a good feeling. For a while I put it aside an got on with other things. Then when my little mate (my 12-year-old cream Burmese cat) died six months ago, all I felt like doing was stitching. so that's what I did. Now that the end is in sight, I can't wait to get it all done. Now it comes to the fiddly bits, trimming the needle-weaving on the back, searching for stray threads and finally, the damping, stretching and ironing. One of these days I'll upload a photo.
Comment by Allison Bradbury on August 31, 2012 at 11:39 Dear Elmsley,
Apologies for the delayed reply - was caught by a "dreaded lurghy" for a while!
The crewel work module requires you to design your own piece, though you are given access to many traditional crewel work books to help you in this process. The stitches you use to work your piece are traditional crewel work stitches. All of the pieces I've seen being worked when I've been a Hampton Court Palace have looked fairly Traditional. It may be that the full-time Foundation Degree students are a little more avant garde in their approach.
Comment by Elmsley Rose on August 1, 2012 at 17:29 Allison,
Doh! Of course bargello would be in the canvas work module if it's included in the course.
I've seen a few people blogging about their RSN modules, and the pieces all seem very modern. Weird abstract stuff. To what extent do you cover historical embroidery? In particular, do you cover Jacobean crewel work as a particular crewel work style?
Comment by Allison Bradbury on August 1, 2012 at 12:27 Dear Elmsley, I think Bargello might be included in the canvas work module - because I've chosen to do the Blackwork Module as a part of my Certificate Coursse, I won't do the canvas work module until I start my Diploma Course. As each module costs nearly £1,000 including materials that may be some time away :(
To complete my Certificate Course, I have to do four modules of which three are compulsory - My compulsory modules are crewel work, Basic Gold work and Silk sShaing, my optional module is Blackwork. Once I've completed them, I have to complete a further six modules to complete my Diploma.
Comment by Elmsley Rose on July 31, 2012 at 13:15 Hi Allison,
Would love to hear about the RSN crewel work - do you do bargello as part of it?
Comment by Allison Bradbury on July 30, 2012 at 8:29 I'm new to Stitchin Fingers, I've been doing a variety of hand embroidery techniques and am mainly self taught. I enrolled on a Royal School of Needlework Certificate Course last year and am currently doing my crewelwork module. To gain the Certificate, I will also need to complete modules in Blackwork, Beginners Gold work and Silk Shading.
