Comment by JoWynn Johns on January 19, 2012 at 12:47 Just posted TAST Weeks 1 and 2 on my page.
Comment by Margaret Blank on January 16, 2012 at 22:13 Thanks, Maureen! I'm about to go to bed now, but will revisit this tomorrow and take a closer look. It seems clear to me though, from what you show in your original post, that I've never done buttonhole stitch -- always blanket stitch, so I'm not surprised that I did it on my TAST block too. My main problem has always been starting and stopping it neatly; I hope if I try buttonhole stitch that this will be alleviated!
Comment by Maureen Bond on January 16, 2012 at 18:54 I found the difference between the Blanket/Buttonhole stitch when I did the 100 details in 200 days. Here is the link to my original post

I hope this helps.

Comment by Sharon Stafford on January 16, 2012 at 2:58 I am planning on starting this as soon as my fabric arrives, but I shall be behind.
Can I ask, does this run for the full 52 weeks of the year?

Comment by Margaret Blank on January 15, 2012 at 16:14 Hmmm...I know when I learned embroidery (almost 50 years ago!), one of the first stitches I learned was blanket stitch, as you described. I have never done buttonhole stitch by hand; I use my sewing machine for that! That said, my sewing machine also has a separate stitch called blanket stitch, which is used for machine applique. So even though my uneven circles are referred to as 'buttonhole wheels', I was doing what you and I call blanket stitch the entire time.
When I have a few minutes, I'm going to check stitch dictionaries (including Sharon's excellent one) to see what else I can find out.
Thanks for your note! :-)
Comment by Tahlia on January 15, 2012 at 15:18 Margaret, I've always been told that "blanket" stitch is the correct name for this one that stitches from far end of leg up to the main thread to create a (90 degree) turn. In other words, the needle enters the fabric away from the top line and emerges at the top line to create the turn. (Gosh. pictures would be easier than words!)
I've also always been told that "buttonhole" stitch is a wrapped stitch in which the needle enters the fabric at the top line, emerges at the distant point of the leg, and creates the topline by the way in which the fabric is wrapped around the needle.
...but that was then. Now we have the internet and we have to share terminology across the globe.
So now I get the impression that the simple stitch that I used to call blanket stitch is now being referred to in common parlance as "buttonhole" and that what I call "buttonhole" is now taking the name of "tailor's buttonhole" or a form of "knotted buttonhole" or some such.
I think that's a shame because blanket stitch is a very unsatisfactory stitch for binding the edges of buttonholes, whereas the tailor's buttonhole stitch is perfect for the job, and I worry that in a few decades when everyone is calling blanket stitch "buttonhole" that people who try to create hand-bound buttonholes won't understand which stitch to use!
....but there are very few of us who still use the tailor's buttonhole stitch to bind buttonholes, so maybe I'm being pedantic.
;)
Comment by Margaret Blank on January 15, 2012 at 14:31 Sharon, I've been referring to Week 2's stitch as 'blanket' rather than 'buttonhole'. Is there a difference?
