What is this virtual gift thing?

It's a thing that Ning have added - don't worry about it as Judy says its a virtual gift giving game a bit like all the stuff that goes on on facebook. To be honest I think fiber folks swap heaps of stuff for real and like Judy I don't feel the need of virtual gifts but some people like them. That's fine, it does not hurt anyone

But what does it mean? The top of the page here says I have 100 credits to get started. If it's virtual, why don't have an unlimited number of credits? Seems like credits are cheap! I know it's a game, but I don't understand it.
