I am looking for some simple style 'Swedish' looking embroidery stitches to work onto a 'bomber' type hat. I am not looking for cross stitch. I want to use a large type heavy thread for this work and need something simple to create a border and a crown area fill-in.
I have Goggled all over to find an example of anything that looks "Swedish" but other than a small far away picture, I could not find any. I can find a lot of stitch charts but I would like to find something more detailed, such as a picture of garment with the stitches.
Did anyone see the Today show before Christmas, where they sent one of their ladies over to climb MT. Kilimanjaro and she wore this hat I am trying to make. It was a simple, heavy felted wool, all one piece hat/cap with no brim, that has the small ear caps in the design. It looked like it was light brown and had large (1 inches) embroidery stitching all around the bottom/face part and then some other designs on the crown. It was so cute!
Anyone done any like this or know where I might find an example as I don't need instructions, I just need a picture to look at for inspiration. .or any ideas?
I have only done simple stitches on any of my works, such as pillow cases, not anything fancy so am not as experianced as a lot of you. I have seem some very pretty works by a lot of you, but to pick out a simple design sititch from some of your works is hard to do as I can not figure out just what stitch is what as they are all together. I do appreciate any suggests. . thanks Janet

I also googled but came up with a few. Most are for swedish weaving technique but I think they could be adapted. This first one is tea towels but could be adapted for a border. Just click on the small photos and they enlarge a bit.

This one is for a throw but it gives you a pattern for a border.

This one shows several different throws

I hope that helps!

Thanks for your efforts, but I can see you guys are getting the same results from your Googles too. These designs are lovely but since I am working on felt and not a fabric, and the fact that I am not that experienced to the point of converting these woven designs into stitches, makes me at a disadvantage.
I have a book with all the stitches I bought many years ago that I have been using and this shows me how to make the stitches, but not how to combine them to do something really pretty.
I have noticed that most of you, from your work, have learned how to take the plain regular stitches and make something really wonderful with the right combinations. I can do the basic stitches and just wanted to combine a few, maybe three to make my border and do the crown This is why I was wanting the pictures so I could go look into my book to find the stitches. For me, having a lot of different stitches in one area is confusing because I cannot tell what stitches was used to do what.
I have been in, many times, to look at all your photos that is in this site, but there are so many and little time to look. I was hoping someone would tell me they already had something I could look at in these picture and then I could go look it up. At least I would have some idea of how a Swedish border should look.
I will keep looking around and I do appreciate your efforts and time. . .Janet

Hey Janet, you can be more explicit, does not want to diagram, want something interesting? stitches are always the same, it is almost 2 or three, the rest is up or down and change colors or you can use thread tape

Hi Gunnel,

Wow, I love those books. I can't understand a word, as I have no Swedish, but there are so many interesting covers. How do you go about ordering some of them? (I'm sure to find someone to help me with the translation.)

Hi Gunnel,

Back in January I saw this reply and as a result tracked down one of the books on the list,
HANDLEDNING I UDSKÅRSÖM

I bought the book and have worked out how do the stitching but being unable to read Swedish I don't know anything about this style of stitching. Such as;
Where in Sweden was it developed, is it still done, what is the history of the style of stitching.

I was wondering if you might be able to give me some direction on how to find these things out. I am intrigued with this style of embroidery. I did a Google search and all I got were my own blog and a couple of places selling this little book.

Hope you can help

Regards,

Carolyne

Hi Janet

Perhaps we can help you another way. If you provide a URL to a picture of a border that you would like, we could give you some suggestions for simple stitches to use to reproduce it.

Wow! This would be great. I have found a few in some of the pictures of our members here too. I have been going through some of the pictures and have found three that looked promising. If I remember right, there are over 6,000 in there and I have only gotten to page 50 so far, as it takes time. I have been wondering if there was a quicker way to look though them or at least find what I am looking for under categories or something.
I will tell you I usually do not follow patterns nor stay on track as I always find myself wanting to 'do my own thing' as I feel most everyone in this site does too. Its just the 'creative' side in us. I just need to learn how to put together what I need and your help will be very appreciated. I promise it will not be hard or too time consuming for you. . I will get back with you if I don't find one that is already put together. . .thanks.. .Janet
