Merrilyn, I'm a couple of years late with my reply here, but I have a studio organizing blog with tips if you are interested.  I love organizing.  Do you have a closet you can dedicate as a supply cabinet?  I use spice jars for buttons (several of them).  I have my supplies in my closet but I am currently looking for a couple of chests of drawers or dressers of the same height so I can store fabrics in one and trims such as lace and ribbons in the other.  I plan to put a counter across the top to use as a work surface.  Since I share the room with our computer, printers etc., the closet will be turned into an office area.  My room is only 10' x 10' but I am lucky to have the space.  I do like Sandra Fox's idea of buying the house next door too though :-)  That would be like a dream, especially if you could add an enclosed walkway between so you didn't have to go outside to get to it.

I have a BIG laundry cum store room so its all in there, but I am a neat person so its all in boxes and everything has its own place...easier for me to find it!!

Nicola

love to see your organising blog

I think we would all love the house next

My poor organizing blog has been horribly neglected this year with all the challenges I'm participating in.

I have a room that is fitted out with storage and working stations but I actually do all my embroidery in the living room.  The one thing I do not have in my sewing room is a long table as I have to leave the bed-settee in there in case we have more than one son visiting at a time.  The storage extends all the way along one wall but even though I have storage boxes with labels I still can't find anything.  I also have a large bookcase completely given over to embroidery books and also some storage bins on the other side of the room.  I think that unless you are a really tidy minded person you just can't keep a sewing room tidy and clear.  My stuff just seems to take over every clear space and even some areas of the floor.

 thankyou all

I don't feel so guilty now

at the moment the pool table is covered with a crazy quilt I'm trying to finish and theres embellishments everywhere

I have a lovely crafting room. I use  plastic bins with covers and i store the containers in metal cabinets. i still have trouble keeping track of things when I am in a frenzy of design.. I pull out fabric and supplies and make a huge mess that I do not notice until  I stop and look around.  Things are not perfect but every thing around is so inspiring it is all me and i love spending lots of time in there.  Iris the train carriage sounds like a wonderfully inspiring place to create I hope it comes together for you soon. Happy stitching Hugs Elaine
