Hey, Y'all, I am fixing to go to Atlanta Monday, getting all my stuff together, looking at my notes, etc. (Sorry UK friends, I couldn't resis a little Suthrin).
I have a big question to all who attended Ph X in the UK. Which techniques did you actually stitch? I am planning on doing my piece putting in all the required elements, but changing some around and including some that are not in the original design, but JE techniques. Yes, you can be original and this IS Ph X, after all.
So, could y'all share which techniques you started at the classes? Thanks so much, Anne G in NC

Anne you may want to move this to the group area under Japanese embroidery as I am not sure people will notice it here.

Hi Anne, I'm starting Phase IX in January and hope to go to Atlanta next November. Good luck! I'd love to see some pictures and notes about your class. There are at least 3 of us in our class who plan to be there next year and I can't wait! Which piece are you doing for your Ph 10? I finish up Ph 8 in November, I'm doing the maple leaves, and you can see from my photo that I did the camellias for Ph 7. I really enjoyed that one. I live in Maryland and take classes from Tonie Evans, who helped with the design "Conception" for JEC. She is a terrific teacher and I drive 2 hours to get to her class, well worth it. Have fun in Atlanta!

Hey, Jeanne, We used to live in Anne Arundel County! I know Tonie and have taken a European embroidery class from her. Then, we went overseas and I started commuting to Atlanta. Easy since my daughter lives there. I did pansies for Ph VII and loved it. That is the technique I always wanted to learn and leaves for VIII. For IX I'm still working on Poem Papers. I've heard lots of griping about it because of the colors and lots of superimposed, but that's the whole point, isn't it. I don't really mind the colors. Some of those tiny motifs are tough, though. I had intended to finish it before starting X, but life got in the way and will have it done before this time next year. I didn't want to wait to take X, so am going ahead. I am looking forward to Kusudama. As you start thinking about it, consider changing colors & even fabric colors. I'll post some pictures when I get some done. I am not doing it the way the Center did the model, but am going to vary the techniques to various areas.
So, I'll keep you updated! What IX are you going to do? Anne

Hi Anne, it's a small world, isn't it? I'm starting the Sake Box with Ladle in January and we plan to finish in time for X. You're right, the primary goal of superimposed is some mastery of it. I have a friend who started JE 15 years ago at the Smithsonian and still hasn't finished all of her pieces. She's taking VIII with us and may join us for IX, too. That would be great as I have a 2 hour drive to class and it's so nice to have company. Your class must start in a week or two, so I'll be looking for your observations and pictures. I'll be away for the first week of November as my husband is having major back surgery at Johns Hopkins on Nov. 3. I'll stay up there with our oldest son and his family, but will take my portable frame with me to work on VIII!
Good luck and enjoy JEC. Jeanne

hello
I wish I was in the UK class sounds like you did a lot of theory on the techneques
I was the only one in our class doing phase 10 and we were not allowed to change anything it had to be done exactly we had to frame up in class and work out all our colours and stitches and mark them on our box chart before we could start to stitch and we had to do all the forground to the techneques that we hadn't done before so they could be done before we went home and as I am not good at cords I wanted to have them started in class as well
But we were able to get a bit of stitching done as we could start stitching at 7am and class would start at 9am till 4.30 pm but we could keep stitching till 9pm everyday for 6 days solid our eyes have had it by the end but we all enjoy the week away
we did have tea breaks when needed

Merrilyn, Have you finished your Ph X? You can always change colors and move techniques now if you want. It comes down to the pieces being our own as well, you know. Where did you take the class?
Just like in the Pansies and Leaves we moved things around and changed colors.
That's what my teacher says and that is what I intend to do.
No way I can stitch form 7:30 till late at night. I've had a bunch of trips lately and am just too pooped. So, I'll work at my own pace. thanks, Anne
