New Groups, Anyone?

If you've been interested in starting a new group for any specific technique, I'm putting together a list. So far, I have machine embroidery and church embroidery as definites. There's also interest in a tatting group, though no definite decision on that yet.

Under the Community Guidelines (found under Site Help), you'll see that groups can be proposed by anyone. If there's enough interest and a willing moderator, just contact me and let me know!

It helps to have a photo that represents the group's technique and a name for the group already lined up, too.

Hi, Susan and Carolyne -

You might try starting a new discussion on the forum titled "Sashiko Group - anyone interested?" to draw attention to the topic. That way, we can establish if there's an interest first.

There's already a Japanese embroidery group, which both of these could fit under, too, so that's a consideration.

Anyway, first thing to do is check to see if there's interest in it...

Groups are great, I'm already a member of lots of groups.  If there are a number of members that share an interest in something not covered by any other group, they should definitely form a group. 

But I think that we should be cautious about forming too many groups especially ones that greatly overlap, I think that it could become confusing, do I discuss this in this group or that one or both?

I would be in favour of some coherence on labelling pictures.

I just searched for pictures labelled "thread painting" and the search found 20 pictures.  I am pretty sure there are more than 20 thread painting picutes among the 30,375 currently uploaded.  I also did a search for "needle painting" and 38 showed up (many of which were also in the thread painting search).

I don't think that we should become a nanny state over this but a list of commonly used labels somewhere, and encouragement to use them would be good.

Sharon did a series of "Post a picture of ... " and asked members to add a very specific label to their pictures.  Perhaps we could run a similar series and each week ask members to add certain labels to their existing relevant pictures.  It would be great if we could get to a stage where you could search for "birds" for example and find every single bird related embroidery on the site.  Plus each week we would have the pleasure of revisiting previously added pictures that we had forgotten about.
