Does anyone out there have any ancient Needlewoman magazines? Around 1934 there were a series of four screen panels, based on Solomon's Song of Songs. I have three completed panels - stitched either by my late mother or myself. I am in need of the stitching instructions for the last panel. I have everything else that I need but not the instructions and if anyone can help me I would be delighted - it would be lovely to complete the screen which my mother started so many years ago.

You are a star! Thank you so much for telling me about the Needlewoman Magazine copies on Ebay. I have found the May 1936 issue, and have snapped it up. I can't wait for it to arrive - after all these years of searching I am very excited!
Many thanks once again

I think that I can spare you a search in your loft. Deb Lee has pointed me at Ebay listings for two antique issues and I think I have found the right one and bought it. What luck.
Many thanks

The magazine has arrived and I now have all the instructions that I need but no colour copy to guide me. Is this something you could scan and send via the internet or upload to this site? I am not sure how things work on this site and don't want to break any rules!

I can email you the picture if you like, although if it is detailed enough to be helpful it will be a very large file. I don't think it would be friendly to put the detailed version on this site, but I could take a photograph and then compress and scale down the picture so that everyone can see what we've been talking about. But please put up a photo of your finished piece when you've done it!

A photograph of the fourth panel would be just all I need, sufficient to see the colours. That would be very helpful to me owing to the fact that a number of the skeins of antique Anchor Flox silk that I have for this screen no longer have their labels on, so I cannot always be sure I have the correct colours or shades - some parts of these panels have rather odd colours e.g. purple and blue minarets and strange coloured flowers ! It is very much a design "of its time"....which was before mine!
Many thanks

Permalink Reply by Grace Lister on May 1, 2012 at 8:00 So pleased to hear that you now have the details you wanted, Margaret. It is so annoying when you can't find them anywhere. As Rachel says, do put a photo up when you have finished so we know what it is like, I have several things dating from the 1950's and yesterday came across a partly made-up needlebook that my mother had started sometime in the 1940's. I have just heard from a friend who is looking for needlebooks with needles in them to take to Roumania where the women have a great shortage of things like this so I think I will finish it and send it to her. It is just a simple felt one of a crinoline lady but it would be nice to think it is being used after all this time.

Thank you so much for the picture. Sadly the photo does not print out clearly. Is it possible that you could email it to me? japembsensei@hotmail.co.uk I think it will be easier to see the colour details then.
Once again, many thanks

Permalink Reply by Margaret Lewis on May 27, 2012 at 7:24 I am so grateful for all the help that members have kindly given me with regard to my hunt for information on the last panel of this Needlewoman screen, published between February and May 1936.
Now that I have been helped towards finding the instructions and a colour picture, I am able to crack on with it and promise to post pictures when it is finished.

I thought you might like to see my progress on the panel. I have now completed the top and centre sections and am moving on to the large grape vine on the bottom, which will keep me quiet for a while. I could not have managed without the picture - as you can see, the tree has some rather unexpected colours in it!!! So typical of the period and I would never have been able to "guess" them correctly.
