finding photos

Does anyone know how to find a photo using a tag......e.g. if I tag one of my photos "canvas", can I use that word to search and find all canvas photos ?

Hi, Teresa,

  If you go to the main page there is a search box on the top right-hand side, next to the sign out.  Key in the word you want and all things related to this will come up!

Tags do put things in categories too - so if you click on a tag you can see every photo tagged with that word on the site. It is a very handy way of sorting photos but many people dont understand how to use them. I am trying to gently coax more people to use them.

That Hopscotch is right search works but someone has  to either name the photo with the search term or tag the photo with the search term for it to come up. Either way thinking about how you name, describe and tag your photos is worth while doing if you want people to find them again once they have slipped off the front page.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how as a community we can encourage people to describe and tag their photos?  With over 19,000 photos it really is worth paying attention to and you would be amazed at some of the fantastic work found on this site

Thanks so much ladies.......I've just used the search button, Barbara and found lots of goodies I hadn't seen before......Sharon, I think I understand the "tags", but should I also name my photos with a word relating to craft.....usually I name them according what they are to me ~ e.g. "Xmas"' .........if they have a craft word in the title, will that help with the search ?

Sharon, I think that your 'Post a photo of ...' is one of the best methods for getting people to tag their pictures.  Next time you hold one, it might be worth reminding people that tags can be added retrospectively, and how it is done.

 

It might also be worth adding something about tags to your note about importing photos from Flickr

 

P.S. For anyone reading this who is wanting to know how to add a tag to an existing photograph,

- click on the photograph,

- click on down arrow on the options button,

- select edit your tags

- type your tags into the box

- you can add multiple tags separated by a coma

- tags of more than one word whould be enclose in double quotes

- e.g. couching, beadwork, "feather stitch", "festival of needles"

- click save

Teresa, personally I would leave the name as what they are to you but add the craft and anything else you can think of to the tags.  Each photo can have multiple tags, so for example on your photograph "Xmas gift 2009" you could add "pin cushion", needlecase, Orts, "chain stitch",  "buttonhole wheels", "French knots", "Algerian eye stitch" to the tags.

Carol-Anne, Thank you so much for your help.......I thought I understood tags, but now I REALLY understand them........I didn't realize I could use talking marks to keep two words together in amongst single words. I think the tags are so valuable as a search tool.......since I've used them as such, I've found heaps of photos I've never seen before......perhaps we could have a challenge to "make sure we tag our photos"

Yes the more tags the better - it just gets fed into the database and its not as thought it is in everyones face but it does help people find stuff with search.

Perhaps I need to emphasise that each photo can have multiple tags. So people worry about using too many.

To continue with Carol-Anne's tag suggestions you could also add terms like linen, evenweave, box,
