I am so enjoying seeing everyone`s crazy quiltingand really want to have a go. Allthough I have a few patchwork, quilting books there is very little on crazy. I would love some tips etc and maybe advice on a suitable book as I am itching to get started.

Permalink Reply by Pippa Price on May 12, 2012 at 2:36 I do not know of a good book I find Sharon's http://inaminuteago.com/stitchindex.html a really good place to look not only for stitches but patterns as well. Also you tube has some good ideas. I know have a small note book beside me and when I see a seam that I really like I draw it into the book, most have come from this site and a lot from http://www.cqjp2012.blogspot.co.uk/ there are hundreds of examples here.
I only started crazy quilting in January and have learnt so much. Biggest one was that you do not use wadding just a base fabric and then your decorative ones on top.

Hi Margaret, I suggest some of the books by Judith Montano (aka Judith Baker Montano) as books that are useful, inexpensive (relatively) and still widely available. The one I used when starting out was 'The Crazy Quilt Handbook'. Judith gives a history, talks about design elements for successful crazy patchwork (including texture, patterns and solids and how to select the fabrics to use), a 'how to' and a bit of a crazy patch stitch dictionary. But she has also produced entire series of books on the subject - including some great stitch guides.
Also quite good is 'An Encyclopedia of Crazy Quilt Stitches and Motifs' by Linda Causee. I htink that this may be available as a free download from a few places on the net.
But my favourite book on the subect and perhaps my crazy patchwork bible is Carole Samples' 'Treasury of Crazyquilt Stitches'. It's getting a little rare now, but you can still buy it through Amazon and the Book Depository, etc. Carole began a blog in 2008 (http://myheartsfancy.blogspot.co.nz/), but she didn't keep it going. There are still a few useufl tips on it though. Some public libraries carry this book over here, so you may find that your library has it, too.
I hope that this information is useful.

Good luck with the library, Margaret.
Perhaps try some of these free sites and downloads for crazy quilt resources:

Permalink Reply by Nicola Thomson on May 14, 2012 at 3:21 I am in that space too Margaret.......there seem to be several ways to do one.I thought you made a quilt as usual(but with funny shapes) and then embellished the material and seams....but it appears its done a different way.
Nicola
If you go to "The Caron Collection" You will find a very good how to article which may be of use to get you started. It is a needlework resource by Leslie Levison.
Margaret the link I should have given you is www.caron-net.com/ I hope you find it useful.

Permalink Reply by Margaret on May 16, 2012 at 1:18 Thanks for all your suggestions, I love Amazon and spend far too much on books there, I like to check out a book in the shops if I do not know it prior to buying as they can sometimes be a disappointment but book shops here in England are rare these days and they no longer have a good craft section unless you are looking for knitting or crochet. The shows are good for books, the next one I can get to is a quilt show in Harrogate in september which I am looking forward to.Have looked at the websites mentioned and they are filling me full of ideas but the quilting is on hold now as I am stitching a sampler for my daughter`s 40th birthday but will return to crazyness as soon as I finish my current project.
